– All About Piano (introduction to piano for beginners and hobbyists)
I am not sure which book(s) to buy. What is the relationship between these different books? Is there any material duplicated between the books? What are the differences in approach between the books?
A) The Beginner Piano E-Book Series is a very effective and inexpensive way for you to start playing in various piano styles. Some familiarity with music notation is recommended. Many of our beginner-level customers start out with these e-books (or the Piano Styles For Beginners combined hard-copy equivalent) before progressing to more in-depth study with our Pop Piano Book and Keyboard Style Series.
The Pop Piano Book is the central 'core' of our piano curriculum, and is recommended for all serious students and musicians working in contemporary piano styles. This book gives you a lot of keyboard harmony and voicings, and then shows you in great detail how to use these to create rhythmic styles for different chord progressions, as well as how to interpret melodies in these styles. The Pop Piano Book is suitable for all levels of student including serious beginners. To get the best out of this book, some familiarity with the keyboard and with music notation is recommended.
The Keyboard Style Series books directly focus on an individual style, with music examples of relevant sub-styles and genres, as well as the techniques used by noted players in each style. These books are great as 'add-ons' to the Pop Piano Book, or as stand-alone methods for different keyboard styles. This series is suitable for 'advanced beginner' to intermediate level students (except for Beginning Rock Keyboard which is more beginner-oriented).
– For Blues Piano students: we recommend the Blues Piano volume (from our Keyboard Style Series) as a foundational text. This can then be supplemented with the Jazz-Blues Piano volume as desired.
– For Jazz Piano students: we recommend the Intro To Jazz Piano volume (from our Keyboard Style Series) as a foundational text. This can then be supplemented with the Contemporary Jazz Piano, Smooth Jazz Piano, and Jazz-Blues Piano volumes as desired.
The Piano Technique Series will develop your technique for playing contemporary pop and jazz styles. The Piano Fitness book gets you playing scales and chords in all keys along with the backing tracks, and is an ideal companion to our Pop Piano Book. The Rock Piano Chops and Jazz-Rock Piano Chops books work on chord voicing, rhythmic groove, and technical skills simultaneously. This series is suitable for 'advanced beginner' to intermediate level students.
The Keyboard Harmony & Voicing Series books add composing, arranging and improvisation dimensions to your piano studies. The Piano Chord Voicings book shows you the chord voicing secrets behind today's contemporary styles. The How To Harmonize book shows you how to choose chords to go with your melodies, and the Piano Zen book shows you how to improvise "Calm Piano" (modern New Age) music, using principles applicable to other styles. Finally, the 150 Keyboard Tips & Lessons book provides an essential A – Z list of topics for today's keyboardist!
The Styles of Famous Artists series shows you the techniques used by today’s top piano/keyboard players. The Piano Styles of 23 Pop Masters book contains pieces written in the style of 23 iconic pop and jazz artists including Billy Joel, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder, using many of the techniques from the Pop Piano Book and the Keyboard Style Series books. The Play Like Elton John book is the most thorough analysis of Elton’s style ever written, and shows you how to apply his unique ‘stylistic DNA’ to your own playing.
The All About Piano book is a great introduction to the piano, and is ideal for beginners and hobbyists. In here you’ll find step-by-step instruction starting from the absolute basics, together with interesting tidbits and background information on famous songs and artists.
If you have further questions about our instruction books, please email us.
Q) Which of your instruction books come with audio included, and which of them have audio available for additional purchase?
A) Our Pop Piano Book, Contemporary Eartraining Levels One and Two, Contemporary Music Theory Level Three, and Gospel Keyboard Styles books all have audio products available for additional purchase, the audio is NOT included with the purchase of these books. For all of our other instruction books, the audio is included in the purchase price of the book (as online audio access).
Q) For the above books that have accompanying audio available for purchase: Do I need to buy this material together with the book(s), or is it optional?
A) If you are buying (or already own) our Contemporary Eartraining Level One and/or Level Two books/pdfs, we strongly recommend that you also purchase the accompanying downloadable audio material. This will enable you to practice the vocal drills and homework exercises (recognition, dictation etc) which are very beneficial. Almost all of our Eartraining book/pdf customers have purchased the accompanying audio.
The mp3s available with The Pop Piano Book and the Contemporary Music Theory Level Three book are not essential, but you are likely to find them valuable. Audio recordings of all the music examples in these books are available, and using these will speed up your learning process. Additionally, for The Pop Piano Book we have Playalong Backing Tracks for the ultimate play-along experience. Around 70% of our Pop Piano Book and Contemporary Music Theory Level Three book customers have purchased the accompanying audio products.
If you are buying (or already own) the Gospel Keyboard Styles book, again you are likely to benefit from the available audio mp3s. However as mentioned above, the Gospel Keyboard Styles book is wholly derived from the Pop Piano Book, and therefore the available Gospel audio mp3s are all included in the Solo Piano Recordings for the Pop Piano Book.
Q) Regarding your Pop Piano Book Video Series: after I purchase the videos, will they always be available? Can I view the videos on any/all of my devices? How do I set up an account at your video store?
A) Yes, after purchasing the videos they will always be available. You can either stream them instantly, or download and watch them offline using a free 'player app' for your device. All commonly-used devices (computers, tablets, mobile phones etc) are supported. When purchasing our Pop Piano Videos, you'll be transferred to the 'video store' part of our website which handles these transactions. The first time you do this, you'll be asked to set up an account with your email address and password. This is a quick and easy process, enabling you to access all of your video content.

Please ship to: Harrison Music, PO Box 5068, West Hills CA 91308. We regret that your return shipment needs to be at your own expense. Please note that if any returned items are received in sub-standard condition, we reserve the right to apply a re-stocking charge (by reducing the refund to your credit card or PayPal account).
For downloadable products: we regret that no returns/refunds are available for digital downloads.
Q) I teach in a school or college and we're interested in using your book(s) as a teaching text for our classes. Can we order the materials from you?
A) Yes, absolutely. We supply our books/pdfs and mp3s to schools and colleges in the U.S. and overseas. Although we are not wholesalers, we're happy to offer discounts depending on quantity of items ordered - for more details, please email us.
