This book is a fun introduction to music theory, for all instrumentalists, vocalists and songwriters. We start with the basics of music notation, and how to find the notes on the piano and on the guitar. Then we cover scales, modes, and intervals, and how chords are created and used in many well-known songs. Throughout the book there are many examples of how the theory concepts apply to different rhythm section instruments (piano, guitar, bass and drums). The book also covers some more intermediate and advanced topics such as chord voicings and substitutions, and includes online audio access to the music examples and play-along tracks!
The All About Music Theory book works great as an easy overview of how music theory works, and/or as an introduction to our more serious and in-depth Contemporary Music Theory book series. The book does contain some extracted material from the Contemporary Music Theory books, in an abbreviated form and without the extensive exercise material contained in those books. (The All About Music Theory book also briefly covers topics such as melody harmonization, counterpoint, song form and chart preparation).
